On the occasion of Dr. Mostafa Chamran’s martyrdom

TEHRAN, June 21 (MNA) – Dr Mostafa Chamran was an Iranian commander who was martyred during the sacred defense – Iraqi imposed war upon Iran (1980-1988).

Dr Chamran was an Iranian scientist who was appointed as first defense minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He served as a commander during sacred defense – Iraqi imposed war upon Iran (1980-1988).

As a child he was educated by Ayatollah Taleghani and Martyr Motahari. THe studied at Alborz High School and then graduated from Tehran University with a bachelor in electro mechanics.

In the late 1950s, he moved to the US and obtained a M.S. degree from the Texas A&M University. He then went on to obtain his Ph.D. in electrical engineering and plasma physics in 1963 from the University of California, Berkeley. He was then hired as a senior research staff scientist at Bell Laboratories and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the 1960s.

Later he received military training in Cuba and Egypt and then 1971 he left the US for Lebanon and joined the camps of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Amal movement.

In 1979 Chamran returned to Iran to join the Islamic Revolution in the country a year later Iraq’s Saddam attacked Iran and Chamran served as minister of defense from September 1979 to 1980 later in March 1980, he was elected as a Tehran representative of Parliament.

During the war he was leading a military unit and was martyred in Dehlavieh on 20 June 1981; Chamran was buried in the Behesht-e Zahra cemetery in Tehran.

Imam Khomeini titled Chamran as a "proud commander of Islam."

In 2014 Ebrahim Hatamikia released a movie named Che to honor Martyr Chamran which received lots of attention and won some awards in International Fajr Festival.
